Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story house with beige horizontal vinyl siding, gray shingled gables and dormer, white-framed windows, a central entry door, and an outdoor air conditioning unit, set on a partly dry lawn under a clear blue sky.

Central AC in Juneau is sized and installed against a question a contractor has to settle first: will this equipment ever actually run. Homes in Juneau City and Borough, AK have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. A compressor that sits idle through every month of the year never cycles through its normal self-clearing processes, and seals dry, refrigerant migrates, and contactors corrode without the load that would otherwise reveal the fault. The installer's job is not to size for a peak cooling day but to design a system whose idle state does not become its failure state.

Existing ductwork is where a central AC installation in Juneau either comes together or gets complicated. Half the homes in Juneau City and Borough, Alaska were built in 1982 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Ducting laid into houses of that era was designed around whatever heating equipment came first, and a new central AC system has to move a different volume of air through paths that were never planned for it. A contractor checks whether those runs can carry the load before anything else gets priced. If they cannot, resizing or rerouting the ductwork becomes part of the job.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house interior showing ducted air handling equipment, ceiling ducts, furniture in two rooms, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines outside the wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components doing the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace-based coil cabinet goes in a utility space, basement, or closet, where conditioned air enters the home's circulation.

The evaporator coil mounts directly above or within that indoor unit, and the refrigerant line set runs between the two cabinets, connecting the outdoor and indoor sides of the system. A thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the home's air temperature and tells the system when to run.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house.
