Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story gray house with white-trimmed windows and a dark front door, fronted by a mowed lawn, a straight concrete walkway to the sidewalk, and large leafy trees on both sides under a clear sky.

A contractor quoting central AC installation in Skagway has to establish, before anything else, what load the equipment would actually serve. Homes in Skagway Municipality, AK have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. Compressor sizing, refrigerant charge, and condenser placement are all calculated against the hours a system expects to run, and here those hours add up to nothing. Installing a central AC system in a home where outdoor temperatures never demand it means the compressor sits idle indefinitely, which carries its own failure modes, but the more direct problem is that no honest load calculation justifies the equipment in the first place.

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, U.S. Monthly Climate Normals 1991-2020, v1.0.1.

Ductwork laid in for a heating-only system was designed around a different airflow demand than central AC places on it. Whether existing runs can carry a new system without rerouting or resizing is what a contractor has to settle before anything else in an installation job here. Half the homes in Skagway Municipality, Alaska were built in 1985 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That share of the housing stock was ducted before central cooling was a common design consideration in the region, which means the layout a contractor finds behind the walls reflects heating priorities, not cooling ones. The electrical service in those same houses warrants the same look before a quote is final.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit linked by lines along the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and houses the compressor and the coil that releases heat to the outside air. Inside, the air handler or furnace blower sits in a utility room, basement, or attic and pushes conditioned air through the house.

The evaporator coil mounts directly above or below the air handler and is where the refrigerant draws heat out of the indoor air. A copper refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, and the thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the living space temperature and signals the system to run.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to this particular house.
